6 Essential Tips for Creating Irresistible Email Headlines That Can’t Not Be Clicked

When you scroll from your preferred social media platform or a website, what element of the content makes you want to click and read an article or visit a page? Of course, it’s the headline. When it comes to email marketing, the same logic applies.

So many people have bloated email inboxes these days, so while they’re scrolling to see what suits them, you need to do everything you can in order to stand out and grab your reader’s attention. Fortunately, there are plenty of tactics you can use here to ensure your email headlines are irresistible.

Today, we’re going to explore six secrets behind writing email headlines that your readers won’t be able to stop themselves clicking on. This is everything you need to know in order to get your email campaigns off to the best start every time.

#1 – Maintain Simplicity

Nowadays, it doesn’t matter whether you’re looking at the latest Apple interface or an innovative website, use of simple and clean space is perhaps one of the best marketing features. Nobody likes to try and decipher something that’s messy and overwhelming. They want clean and easy to consume content.

This same logic applies to your email headlines. Time is of the essence when it comes to your subject lines, and most people will make a decision on whether to open your email in a matter of a second or two. This means if your subject line takes longer than a second, you’ll have already lost a lot of potential readers.

It can be tempting to opt for comedy or humor to draw in the readers, but this is also a risky technique since many people won’t take the time to understand the joke, and the subject line, in general, won’t be as punchy as it could be.

The best way to remember this is the fact that every email should have a specific purpose and a reason for being sent in the first place. You should never just send emails for the sake of sending one, even if you haven’t sent one in a while.

This is due to the fact that your readers may actually read your purposeless emails which will most likely result in them unsubscribing to your lists or ignoring your future content. So, with the purpose of your email in mind, use this to craft a precise subject line that relates directly with the email.

You may even want to use single-world subject lines since this is a great way to stand out among the rest of the emails that use sentences; but do so wisely.

#2 – Implement Questions

One of the best ways to get your emails opened is to pose a thought-provoking question that your readers can’t help but click to learn the answer to. This form of question might come across as clickbait, but as long as you’re provided value to the reader within your email, this won’t create negativity.

Even something simple like ‘Have you got what it takes to earn seven figures?’ can create a lot of questions in the reader’s head, and they’ll begin to want to know if they can, and how they can do it. This would be a great example if you were running an entrepreneur/business-themed website or business.

“Of course, you can get creative to see what works best for you, but it’s always a good idea to write out multiple versions of your question, and then A/B test them to see which one works best,” shares Nina Goodwin, an email marketer for Academized.

#3 – Continue with Pre-Text

While it’s important to focus on the subject line, it’s vital that you consider the entire experience that your reader has while searching through their email. This means that you not only have your subject line but also the extra bit of text afterward.

A professional subject line will implement this pre-text since it gives you a lot more space to play around with your message and allows you to get really creative. Of course, your subject line will be bold and will need to stand out on its own, but in order to get your message opened, it’s a great idea to combine these two elements.

Thanks to automated emails, you can now continue to personalise emails thanks to all the data you may have within your mailing lists. This allows you to create dedicated emails where you can include a person’s name, their location, or any other demographic information that relates to them.

Of course, the more personalised the email is, the more likely they are to relate to it and open it, especially when this personalised subject line is integrated and combined with a personalised line of pre-text.

#4 – Write Perfectly and to the Highest Quality

If a reader is scrolling through their inbox, and they catch your subject line, but it’s riddled with typosmistakes or grammatical errors, do you think they’re going to click to read the rest of your email? Would you?

Writing your headlines to the highest possible quality is the best way to catch your reader’s attention, and to give them the trust and knowledge that the email content inside is the quality they’re looking for. Here are some online tools that can help;

#5 – Tempt with Listicles

Listicles are, by far, one of the most popular forms of online content since it’s easy to consume, usually a nice balance between words and images, and can portray a lot of information in an easily digestible format.

Email readers know this and enjoy these kinds of articles which is why they are more likely to click on them when the subject line suggests it. For example, you could use headlines like;

  • 10 jaw-dropping stunt videos on YouTube
  • 7 best beaches you need to visit this year
  • 3 ways to increase your productivity right now
  • 9 things you need to make a viral video

As you can see, it’s easy to create listicles that are going to make people want to open them. Even with these quick examples, your mind always starts spinning with ideas of where the best beaches are, and how do you make a viral video?

“Statistically, odd-numbered lists result in more clicks and opens, and don’t forget to use buzzwords and emotional words like ‘need’, ‘want’, and ‘now’ in order to create a sense of urgency and motivation within the reader to click open your email,” explains Sam Diaz, an email marketer for TopCanadianWriters.

Lists are a really great way to invoke feelings of curiosity within your readers. Remember that the most important thing to remember is that you’re aiming to let your email stand out among the rest of the surrounding emails, regardless of what they may be.

If you want create a visually-stimulating subject line that uses a listicle format that uses numbers as visual breaks and creates intrigue into the actual content of the email, you’re onto a winning formula.

#6 – Add a Bit of Mystery

Since you want your email to be opened, you don’t want to give away everything within your subject line. This means your reader is reading your subject line and then thinking they know exactly what you’re going to say and therefore have no reason to waste their time with your email.

Adding a bit of mystery can be a great way to capture the intrigue of a reader and drastically increase your chances of being opened. Using the examples we used above, you could write headlines like;

  • How are these stunts even possible!?
  • Have you been to the world’s best beach?
  • These productivity-enhancing tips are insane…
  • Is this the trick to going viral you’ve been waiting for?

This is a nice mixture of questions and adding mystery. Although you’ve only got a second to grab your reader’s attention, getting them thinking about your content and what lies within is what you’re aiming for when it comes to writing these subject lines; no matter which approach you want to take.

When it comes to writing your emails, ensure that you take your time to write out several versions and test them to see which ones perform best. Also take note of the character allowance you have with subject lines (usually around the 50-mark), and, perhaps most importantly, remember to use CAPS sparingly!
